Not to mention, you’ll stand out in today’s competitive job market and be ready for that next promotion or opportunity. Earning this credential shows employers that you’ve gained broader, deeper Microsoft Office expertise. You will stand head and shoulders above the rest.

You CAN do this. You’re *already* using the technology!

The Exams

There are three certification levels: Specialist, Expert and Master. Here’s how they work:

  1. Specialist: Pass one of the “Core” exams.
  2. Expert: Pass the two-part Word Expert or Excel Expert exam. Good news, there aren’t pre-reqs to take these exams. You can jump straight to the Expert exams.
  3. Master: Pass four exams.

Master is the highest level. That’s what every assistant should strive for. As a former assistant w/ 15 certifications, I recommend and challenge you to pursue Master certification.

And the good news is, by pursuing Master certification, you’ll achieve your Expert level along the way.

Again…You CAN do this. You’re *already* using the technology!

How long it takes to get certified

It’s based on how much time you have to dedicate to this. If you are working full-time, it’s reasonable that you can complete a Master certification in 3 months to a year. If you’re in between jobs, you can achieve Master certification in 2 weeks to 3 months.

How much does it cost?

You’ll want to budget $600 USD for a Master level certification. This includes 4 exams with retake option, proctor fees, and study software.

Is there a study course?

Don’t waste your time on a study course! I’ve taken 15 exams. And the best way to study is to use Gmetrix testing/prep software. Be sure to purchase the full suite of exams (not the individual exams).

Use the software on the computer that has the version you’re testing for. When you’re ready to study, start the software in testing mode to get a baseline where you are. Don’t worry when you get stuff wrong. It’s just a baseline.

Then put it in training mode to help you study. Once you study, go back to test mode. Watch your score skyrocket! Repeat as necessary until your score levels out. If you find that you’re missing a skill, search for videos on YouTube on the particular topic you need. Then return to Gmetrix once you ‘get it’.

A study course or a book will make you commit to learning *everything*. My recommended method allows you to skip what you already know and seek only what you don’t.

Can I take the exams online?

Regrettably, you can’t take the exams online. You’ll have to go to a testing center. Find your nearest testing center here:  If there isn’t one in your area, don’t let that stop you! Check out a city where a friend or family member lives and plan your tests around your next visit or your next holiday.  There are no restrictions where you can take an exam. What a great excuse to get away to Barcelona, Spain!
